How to convert salary to hourly
Divide your yearly salary by the number of hours you work in a year. With a standard 40-hour week and 52 paid weeks, that's 2,080 hours:
Hourly = Yearly salary ÷ (Hours per week × Weeks paid per year)
So a salary of 50,000 a year works out to about 24.04 an hour. To go the other way, multiply your hourly rate by 2,080.
Quick reference
- Monthly → yearly: multiply by 12.
- Weekly → yearly: multiply by 52.
- Every two weeks → yearly: multiply by 26. That's 26 paychecks, not 24, so two months a year have three paydays.
- Hourly → monthly: multiply by hours per week × 52 ÷ 12. At 40 hours, that's about 173.3 hours a month.
Comparing job offers fairly
Two offers with the same salary can pay very different hourly amounts. If one job expects 50 hours a week and another 40, the second pays 25% more for each hour you work. Change the hours above to compare. Remember to also weigh benefits like health cover, pension contributions and paid leave.
Frequently asked questions
Is this before or after tax?
The calculator converts whatever figure you enter. Enter your gross pay to get gross results, or your net pay to get take-home results.
How should I handle unpaid time off?
If you're paid hourly and don't get paid holidays, enter your unpaid weeks. The yearly figure then uses only the weeks you actually work.
How many working hours are in a month?
On average, 40 × 52 ÷ 12 ≈ 173.3 hours. The exact number depends on the month and on public holidays where you live.
